Polar Bear Dip, Snow Fest & Family Day

Port Elgin | by John Divinski

The Family Day weekend is here and Saugeen Shores will be a busy place with family activities.

The Family Day weekend is upon us and Saugeen Shores will be a busy place with family activities.
One of the highlights of the weekend though, comes at the end on the Holiday Monday Family Day.
The Saugeen Shores Lifesaving Club will be holding its 5th annual Polar Bear dip at the Port Elgin main beach.
Club member Michael Bohnert says about 15 club members will be taking the plunge around 10AM.
Bohnert says "This is SSLC's biggest fundraiser of the year with all proceeds going towards equipment....and assisting athletes in their training."
Although it's just club members taking part, Bohnert invites everyone down to the beach on Monday to cheer on the brave souls.
Bohnert says it's a "mental game" for the athletes to get geared up to hit the frigid water but once the dip is underway, it's not as difficult as it seems.
Besides the Polar Bear event, the Port Elgin BIA will be hosting Snowfest in the downtown area all weekend.
To that end, Green Street from Goderich to Waterloo Streets, will be closed to traffic beginning Friday, February 17th at 9AM until Tuesday, February 21st at noon.
Snowfest itself will include activities such as snow painting and snowman building.
The snow will come from the arena via dump trucks and loaders and will be hauled in on Friday and removed the following Tuesday.
