Grey Bruce Telecom (GBTEL) has received over $900,000 in funding to set up a high-speed fibre optic network around Bruce County.
The funds coming through Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada’s Universal Broadband Fund’s Rapid Response Stream, will allow GBTEL to install high-speed internet in parts of Sauble Beach, Allenford and Tara.
According to a release, workers have already begun construction in some of these areas to get up to 253 homes connected no later than Nov. 15. Other communities around the Sauble Beach and Allenford could potentially also experience the benefits as a result of GBTEL’s increased backbone capacity due to the funding.
“GBTEL is thrilled to bring its advanced fibre optic network to the hard working people of South Sauble Beach, Allenford and Tara,” says GBTEL President Richard Gils. “We have worked on numerous applications to bring better internet to these areas for years and we’ve finally got a solution in place.”
The funding is in addition to the money GBTEL previously received through SWIFT, a regional broadband expansion project that works with municipalities to bring high-speed internet services, in their effort to connect Sauble Beach and Allenford, along with other homes, cottages and businesses.
“This will provide extensive benefits to Sauble Beach, Allenford and Tara for years to come,” says Gils.
