The Grey Sauble Conservation Authority is honouring one of its founders.
Elwood Moore was recognized on Nov. 25 with the installation of a new bench outside the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority Arboretum and Administration Centre.
Moore was a founding member of the North Grey Region Conservation Authority in 1957. The Sauble Valley Authority was founded a short time afterwards in 1958. Then in 1985 the two organizations merged together, to create the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority.
Grey Sauble Conservation Authority CAO Tim Lanthier says they wanted to commemorate Moore for a couple of reasons, him turning 100-years-old this year and after he sat as a board of directors member for 44-years.
“It is my understanding, that is the longest standing board of directorship in the province of Ontario,” says Lanthier.
In addition to setting up the bench, Lanthier say a plaque was given to Moore congratulating him on his birthday and honouring his 44 years of service to the conservation authority.
Despite being a cold and wet day, Lanthier says Moore was able to come out to see the bench where he was greeted by other members of the conservation authority who thanked him for all of his work.
Lanthier describes all of the work the conservation authority does today and the nearly 29,000 acres of land they own, can be attributed back to the founding members.
“The members recognized a need for somebody to look after the environment. This was stemming for things like erosion and flooding and a desire from both the province and the local municipalities to have an organization in place that could help look after these issues. Elwood being one of the founding members, and certainly being on the board for all that time, contributed towards many of the successes that we as an organization made us what we are today,” says Lanthier.
Lanthier says when spring rolls around they will also be planting a tree in honour of Moore beside the bench.
