The movie theatre in Port Elgin is closing after this weekend.
Port Elgin Cinemas owners Tom and Christine Wright are retiring to spend more time with their family after being in the cinema business for over 46 years, including 24 years in Saugeen Shores.
Tom Wright says they decided to retire in 2019, and put the building up for sale in February 2020 before the onset of the pandemic. The sale is expected to close next week.
Wright says the new owners do not intend to keep the theatre business going. He did not name the buyer or what will be done with the building.
The Wrights have sold much of the equipment and seats.
Tom Wright says this is their final weekend to give back to their patrons with a free movie to say thank you.
The 1995 version of Jumanji starring Robin Williams will be playing for free tonight, Saturday and Sunday.
They say to show up early, it’s first come first served. Vaccine proof is required and pandemic safety measures will be in place.
A Facebook post from the Wrights says, “We are very grateful of being in business in Saugeen Shores with the support of everyone near and far. From going to the movies, private bubble screenings, concession take-out sales, streaming services and donations for the past years.”
They add, “It is now time to retire so we can enjoy our 5 adult children/spouses, 10 grandchildren and and 2 great grandchildren. Now it is time for us to relax, enjoy our families and travel this great country we live in coast to coast.”
Jumanji plays at 6:45 Friday night, Saturday 1:15 and 6:45 Sunday 1:15 & 6:45.
