Grey County Committee of the Whole has approved a $2.5 million tender for reconstruction of Grey Road 15 in Owen Sound.
During a meeting on April 28, a report was brought forward recommending awarding the tender to MacDonnell Excavating Limited for work to be done on East Bayshore Road.
The report says the City of Owen Sound and the county have worked together to complete a design for the reconstruction of a section of Grey Road 15 from 3rd Avenue East to 600 meters north of 32nd Street East.
The county owns the road right-of-way and has jurisdiction over it and given the poor condition of the road, it requires reconstruction.
The project includes upgrading the road to a combination of both an urban and rural cross section, featuring the reconstruction of the roadbed, retaining walls and an expanded storm sewer network.
The city’s contribution to the project will be to install a new sanitary force main as well as replace a number of hydrants which form part of the water distribution system.
The county will be responsible for the road work.
About half of the costs for this project will be funded by Owen Sound.
The report says the project is facing a surplus of $204,000, which could be attributed to the cost of retaining wall being lower than projected, or a competitive bidding amongst local contractors.
Staff are recommending to use the surplus to help offset any shortfall in other projects, or put it into the transportation capital reserves.
