The second phase of the Lamont Sports Park fundraising campaign is starting strong with $65,000 in donations in its first day.
The town says a viewing of the park event was held on June 4, and gave attendees a chance to make donations towards supporting the campaign in reaching its $1 million goal.
The fundraising, however, exceeded launch expectations for the open portion of fundraising efforts, which was until recently limited to businesses.
The town says close to 1,000 visitors attened the park over the course of the afternoon, and four groups signed up for $10,000 donations.
These donations came from The Devils Ladies’ fastball team, Caley Farms, Social Athletics of Saugeen Shores, and Meridian Credit Union.
In addition, $5,000 donations were given by Vice Deputy Mayor and Committee Co-Chair Mike Myatt and his family, Committee Co-Chair Rob Stanley and his family, and from Ken and Freda McKinnon and their family.
Phase two of the fundraising campaign’s original goal was to raise money through donations to help build two youth ball diamonds in addition to the already completed first phase’s four adult ball diamonds and accessible playground to be built in later 2023.
A number of local politicians attended the event and thanked park visitors and the special guests.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says from the beginning, this has been a community project.
“The community has done a huge amount of work. I’m absolutely certain they are going to not only hit their goal but they are going to exceed it, allowing us to build other park elements ahead of schedule,” says Charbonneau.
Stanley adds the park is another example of Saugeen Shores defining itself as a vibrant, caring community.
“It is further evidence of the town’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, diversity and inclusive participation,” says Stanley.
