A Bruce Shrine Club member is biking 850 kilometres from Saugeen Shores to Montreal to raise funds for the Shriners Hospital.
Alex Rauket took off on his bike the morning of June 28 with the support of family as he plans to ride eight days across the province.
Secretary for the Bruce Shrine Club Bill Blackwell says initially, Rauket approached the club about 10 months ago and proposed doing something to raise awareness about Shriners and raise funds for the children’s hospital in Montreal.
“He said he wanted to ride his bike from the Saugeen Shores Masonic Centre to the hospital in Montreal,” says Blackwell.
Blackwell says after receiving the go ahead from the clubs head office, they began organizing with other club areas Rauket will be passing through on his ride.
Blackwell adds Rauket’s original goal was to raise at least $25,000, but even before he got on his bike, he had already raised over $56,000.
“So without even pedaling 10 feet towards Montreal, he has doubled his goal. It is going to be interesting to see as he goes along what kind of money he has raised or have donated,” says Blackwell. “One-hundred percent of the funds that are given to him in donations are going to the children’s hospital in Montreal.”
Blackwell says Rauket is accompanied by a chase team comprised of family members and the club has set aside funds to cover Rauket’s expenses.
