Work to improve the Southampton Landfill is set to get underway.
Saugeen Shores committee of the whole received an update about a project to redevelop the entrance to the landfill at its meeting July 25th.
Staff say the entrance is at capacity for the amount of traffic and waste coming in and needs to be expanded.
GM BluePlan engineering has designed a new entrance to the west of the existing one, with a new transfer station, scales and recycling area. The work will be done in two phases.
Phase one will include earth moving, retaining walls, and first lift of asphalt.
It will be done by Welsh Construction for just under $1.2 million before HST.
Phase one is expected to be complete by November 15, 2022.
Phase two is set to be tendered this coming winter, and included in the 2023 budget with project completion by late summer 2023.
It will include new scales, scale house, septic bed, fencing, signage, second lift of asphalt, and line painting.
If phase two is approved in the 2023 budget, it would be slated for completion by late summer 2023.
The landfill will continue to operate its existing entrance until the new entrance becomes operational.
During discussion about the staff report update, Councillor Cheryl Grace asked if the new entrance allowed for residents to drop off their own recycling again. The practice was discontinued in recent years, with staff confirming Monday night that it was stopped because people were contaminating the bins with items that did not belong in them.
Town staff say bringing it back in some form is being considered, but no decision has been made yet.
