The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has decided to reduce development charges by 50 per cent for a proposed Community Living affordable housing development in Wiarton.
The Bruce Peninsula Association for Community Living is proposing to construct an office, meeting space and independent living units at William Street and Claude Street in Wiarton.
Mayor Janice Jackson says the development charge reduction council approved on August 18th will work out to about $39,000.
She says the Town is also giving the community living association a $7,000 grant that can be used to offset building permit fees.
The Bruce Peninsula Association for Community Living said in a presentation to council back on August 2nd it has once again partnered with Bruce County which will subsidize the nine proposed bachelor apartment units. They hope to begin the building process this year.
The association has previously helped create a nine-unit apartment building on Berford Street in 2010 and a four-unit apartment on Mary Street in 2018.
It says it is also partnering with the Wiarton Rotary Club to develop a ‘food security’ fund to help those for whom Community Living doesn’t receive provincial funding.
The organization is applying to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for a mortgage for the project.
Council has agreed to write a letter of support for the project to the CMHC.
