The Meaford International Film Festival (MIFF) opens today.
The four-day event at the Meaford Hall kicks off with a screening of the award-winning documentary Flee, which organizers say tells the true story of a man on the verge of marriage who is compelled to reveal his hidden past for the first time.
“Flee follows the extraordinary tale of a refugee, who has many experiences few of us can imagine, and describes them in vivid detail,” says MIFF Artistic Director Anna den Hengst.
The co-founder and executive director of the FCJ Refugee Centre, Loly Rico will be on hand in Meaford Thursday night as a special guest to provide more insight into the topic explored in Flee.
Rico has been working to advance justice and equity for precarious migrant populations for more than 30 years and has received many awards including City of Toronto Constance E. Hamilton Award, the YMCA Peace Medallion and the YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction award.
MIFF organizers say there will also be student film screened nightly from the Grey Bruce Youth Film Festival.
