Northern Bruce Peninsula council is taking steps to address the bright street lights installed at Pike Bay after receiving a number of letters.
During a meeting on Sept. 26, council received eight letters addressing the lights saying they were too bright for the road.
Mayor Milt McIver says it seems in addition to the brightness of the lights, there is also the issue of the angling and position of the lights.
“We thought we were being supportive of the community and we have run into some opposition, but we are working to address the concerns that have been raised,” says McIver. “We directed this to our public works and our management staff to take a look at this and to see what we can do to try to address these problems.”
Many letters written also address how they were promised dark sky lighting. McIver explains these are lights that point down to the road and include shading to ensure there is no light emitting onto resident’s property’s.
“The lights are dark sky compliant. All lights we put in now are dark sky compliant,” says McIver.
One residents writes, “the light that was installed lights all the surrounding properties up, the light from it basically lights up all my property even to the point of illuminating and casting shadows on my garage which is way back behind the cottage and several hundred feet from the light.”
McIver says staff will take the next couple of weeks to determine how to address this issue and come back with recommendations.
