Bruce Power is joining the Canadian delegation at an international climate change convention, promoting nuclear power.
The 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) is being held in Egypt from Nov. 6 to the 18.
The conference is hosting the largest representation from the nuclear industry to date, which Bruce Power says signifies a growing recognition of no path towards net zero without carbon-free nuclear power.
Bruce Power’s Head of Corporate Affairs Pat Dalzell, who is representing the company at the conference says, Ontario has become the envy of many jurisdictions around the world, seeing a deeply decarbonized electricity grid.
“Countries around the world have committed to various actions since COP26, and Bruce Power is building on its position of strength and taking a number of actions now to support Ontario and Canada progress its climate targets and enable a net zero future,” says Dalzell.
Bruce Power is taking part in the Canadian Nuclear Association’s (CNA) delegation, which is part of the broader delegation from Canada, including representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change, and Natural Resources Canada.
Bruce Power Director of Community, Media Relations and Economic Development John Peevers says while at the convention, Bruce Power will be taking the opportunity to be part of the dialogue in global decarbonization efforts.
“There are a lot of decision makers who will help set the policy that will reach these targets. So the conversations are important but I think the action is even more important. Bruce Power has demonstrated we’ve consistently taken action to increase our output to provide clean electricity,” says Peevers.
Peevers says Bruce Power will be talking at the conference about the benefits of using nuclear energy.
“Nuclear is clean, it’s reliable, I think it has got a bright future and we acknowledge there is new technology potentially coming down the pipe that will help increase the nuclear supply world wide,” says Peevers.
Bruce Power has set a target of reaching net zero emissions from site operations by 2027, making it the first nuclear operator in North America to announce this commitment.
While the company already produces large volumes of emissions-free electricity, the next step is making sure it minimizes and offsets emissions from vehicles, machinery, buildings, and equipment.
