The Rural Ontario Municipal Association Conference is underway in Toronto.
The annual event involves over 1,000 local and provincial politicians and staff, as well as some federal representatives.
Representatives from local municipalities are there, as well as Huron-Bruce Progressive Conservative MPP and Minister of Agriculture Lisa Thompson and Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Progressive Conservative MPP Rick Byers.
Grey Highlands posted on social media Monday, members of council and staff met with long-Term Care Minister Paul Calandra about improving long-term care in Grey Highlands.
Huron-Bruce’s Lisa Thompson tweeted, she was pleased to see the leadership from Huron and Bruce play a key role during a ROMA meeting with wardens representing the Western Ontario Wardens Caucus during the first day of the annual conference. She says, “We discussed affordable/attainable housing, labour, economic development & supports for mental health.”
The opening keynote address Sunday was by Jesse Wente, who is a broadcaster and Indigenous advocate. His address focused on creating meaningful change for Indigenous people.
Some topics of interest on this year’s program include short-term accommodations, welcoming newcomers to rural Ontario, digital connectivity and housing affordability, supporting seniors in rural communities, homelessness and green energy including nuclear power as well as tourism.
Outside of those talks, local reps have delegations with provincial politicians and their staff to advocate for local issues.
The conference wraps up tomorrow afternoon.
