The Huron Heights Public School in Kincardine is organizing some fundraising events for a new playground.
The school says it aims to have a new playground for over 300 students to enjoy next fall, and hopes to hit their financial goal of $70,000 by January 2024.
Principal Kim Tolton says, “our priority is making sure we’re able to provide our students with the tools they need to learn and grow both inside and outside the classroom. Our current playground structure is outdated and does not meet the standard for an inclusive space for all students.”
Fundraising efforts for the playground began in September 2022 with the assistance of a committee comprised of teachers and parents. With some help from students, teachers and parents, the school has hosted movie nights, sold popcorn bags, had a Christmas bake sale, and a music event, raising $10,000 in five months.
In January, the school adds the Huron Heights Home and School Association made a $20,000 donation.
President of Home and School Christie Anderson says as they grow in student population, so does the need for their playground to expand and improve to be inclusive for everyone.
“Home and School members are committed to helping the Playground Revitalization Committee financially to bettering the future outdoor space for our children. Our goal is to obtain the best for each student and that is not always in the classroom,” says Anderson.
The school will be planning a few community events to help reach its goal, with the next being a Mother’s Day Market on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be an entry by donation event and will feature vendors and door prizes. Additionally there will be a raffle basket station created by the students.
