Tall ships are coming to Port Elgin Harbour this week.
The Town of Saugeen Shores says in a social media post, traditionally rigged ships will be at the harbour June 28th, 29th, and 30th.
The Brigs Youth Sail Training ships TS Pathfinder and STV Playfair are due to set off from Port Elgin to Tobermory for a training event called ‘Race up the Bruce.’ That will take youth sailing trainees up to Tobermory and around the islands from June 30th to July 7th.
The ships are scheduled to sail around various parts of Georgian Bay this summer, including between Tobermory and Collingwood, as well as to Midland and back down the Lake Huron shoreline to Kincardine.
According to Brigs Youth Sailing’s website, the TS Playfair was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973. It was designed by Frances A. MacLachlan and built in Kingston, Ont. It’s close to 60 feet long.
The STV Pathfinder is a purpose built sail training ship, also designed by MacLachlan that has seen an extensive refit since it was built in 1963. It’s also about 60 feet long.
