The Municipality of Grey Highlands says that swimming isn’t allowed in Lake Eugenia.
According to the municipality’s website, as of July 28th swimming in a lake is not permitted because of blue-green algae.
The municipality says to not swim in or drink the water where there is an apparent algae bloom.
Blooms of blue-green algae can have different appearances, including looking like foam, and can appear in a range of colours, including olive green or red.
Blue-green algae is caused by cyanobacteria, which can cause itchy, irritated eyes and skin from direct contact, including from swimming or water skiing in affected waters.
If swallowed, it can cause flu-like symptoms, including headache, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
