Firefighters were on the scene today in Lion’s Head battling a blaze at the local Foodland.
Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt says around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 29, Lion’s Head firefighters received word of the blaze which started on the exterior of the building.
The fire proceeded to work its way into the walls of the grocery store and into the basement.
He says no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was a result of maintenance work being done on the outside of the building.
Burt estimates the damages to be between $1 million to $1.5 million.
He adds the damage to the building is mostly on the exterior and the roof. The building also suffered smoke damage.
“There is no power to the building right now and we are working with the owner of the store to ensure the building can get up and running as soon as possible,” says Burt.
About 40 firefighters were on the scene from Lion’s Head, Tobermory, Owen Sound, and Wiarton departments.
“Quick actions from the store employees and the workers that were working outside were able to keep the fire at bay until firefighters showed up and able to extinguish the fire,” says Burt.
