A beachfront market, restaurant and retail building in Port Elgin is a step closer to being constructed after moving forward in the regulatory process.
The Town of Saugeen Shores has provided the Cedar Crescent Village project with a building permit for its south phase.
The Town had already issued a permit for the north phase in March.
A release says the permits finalize the structure’s design and drawings after meeting all appropriate building code regulations.
The Town notes, The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has reviewed and approved the project. As well, the province’s Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks had issued a permit to take water in November 2022.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says, “That opens the door for advancing construction,” adding it’s now in the hands of the proponents to start the project.
“There’s the regulatory process, and then there’s other processes in terms of finding a builder and getting all of the logistical elements of getting a project under construction arranged,” says Charbonneau, adding he knows they’re working on it.
Charbonneau says, “I think what you can take by the fact that we’ve issued the building permits to them, and they’ve picked them up and paid for them should tell everybody that they’re moving along and intending to get going.”
He says there’s no firm start or end date set at this point for the construction project.
Cedar Crescent Village is a public-private partnership that will see the construction of a business complex with a market, restaurant with rooftop patio, and a couple of retail spaces.
