Meaford is going to look at options to help make the intersection of William and Cook Street more safe.
Council approved a motion from Coun. Tony Bell during a meeting on Nov. 13.
The motion says the municipality has received complaints about this intersection which currently is a two-way stop, with stop signs on William Street.
Bell’s motion recommends staff bring back a report with options on how to address safety in this area including potentially making it a four-way stop, have no parking restrictions around the intersection, or installing a flashing light above the intersection.
Bell says he has seen instances when the stop sign on William Street is blocked.
“It’s for folks who may not know and they see no stop sign and they can travel right through William Street and it’s Cooks Street that’s got the straight through. I am hoping that with staff looking into this, come up with a way that it improves that particular corner,” says Bell.
He adds since his time on council, this issue has been brought to his attention about seven times.
The motion was met by support from other councillors, with Coun. Brandon Forder adding as his office is at the corner of the intersection, he regularly comes close to being t-boned.
“We have a lot of little children that play on that area street as well. People are just ripping along Cook Street because it’s a through way. For community safety, this is something that is very worth looking at,” says Forder.
