The Bluewater District School Board is looking at swapping land with the Municipality of Meaford.
The board held a meeting to discuss a land swap proposal on Dec. 5, in which they voted to sell the track lands at the former Georgian Bay Community School to the town.
General Manager of Purchasing and Transportation Brian Hayman says, “last year the school land was sold and then now this year, we are looking to sell off the track land. The track land is in two parcels separated by an open road allowance that is the Municipality of Meaford,” says Hayman.
He says the BWDSB is working with Meaford to swap the lands.
“We would take over the unassumed road allowance that is between the two parcels of land and we would in turn give the town of Meaford a portion of the corner of our lot that we have,” says Hayman.
He says if the land swap is agreed upon, it would allow the board to sell almost 8.5 acres of connected land. He was not able to say how much revenue it would generate for the board.
Hayman says the land swap process has been in the works for months.
“We have been open to conversations with the Town of Meaford and what they will do is they have not taken it to their council as of yet, but they need to have approval from the Bluewater board that we are accepting of it before anything else more,” says Hayman.
While the BWDSB does not have an exact timeline for when they will swap the land with Meaford, they do want to proceed with the sale as soon as possible.
A BWDSB committee will need to approve this land swap before Meaford votes if they would accept the land swap as well.
Hayman says he expects the committee to make a decision by the end of the year.
