Hundreds of people are expected to plunge into Lake Huron for a refreshing start to the new year in Southampton.
A polar bear plunge is set to go January 1st at 2 p.m. that will see brave participants dunk into the beach’s cold water by the flagpole on High Street.
Refresh cold pressed juice shop owner and plunge Organizer Jeff Cody says it’s the third year for the big community plunge. “It brings the community together,” says Cody noting it’s something different to do on the first day of a new year.
Cody says the Salvation Army will be there with a van to accept donations of food, money, clothes and other items. The Rotary Club of Southampton will be volunteering and will have Tim Hortons hot chocolate for those who would like to warm up.
Saugeen Shores Firefighters will also be on hand in case of emergencies.
“We’re looking for local drone operators and photographers who are willing and want to come down and take some videos and pictures of the get together.”
Cody estimates last year’s event saw between 300 and 400 people on the beach.
He recommends arriving at the beach at least 15 to 20 minutes before the plunge, otherwise you’ll miss it, due to the time it takes to find parking and to make your way through the crowd on the beach.
He anticipates the water might be around 2 degrees celsius on January 1st.
Cody is part of a small local group that does cold water plunges three times a week at the Morpeth Street beach access Saturday mornings and also Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
For those who plan to take part in the big New Year’s Day plunge, Cody suggests wearing or bringing loose, warm clothing over your swim suit, so it’s easy to put back on after the plunge. A housecoat is also a good choice. Water shoes, sandals or flip flops are helpful as that area of the beach can be rocky going in and out of the water.
