Snowmobile enthusiasts in Grey Bruce have welcomed all of the snow and cold weather in recent days.
Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs District 9 manager Karen Buratynski says club volunteers are out working to get more trails open by this weekend.
“At this point, club volunteers are out inspecting trails, still building trail,” Buratynski says. “Groomers are out rolling to try and build and maintain that base. We’re looking forward to some possibly great riding this weekend.”
There are a few riding opportunities available already. According to the OFSC interactive trail guide, route B110 — which runs from Owen Sound to Orangeville essentially parallel to Highway 10 — is open with limited availability. There are also some trails open near Shallow Lake, Hepworth and Sauble Beach.
Buratynski says the recent weather has allowed the snowmobile season in Bruce and Grey counties to start a bit earlier than usual.
“We usually plan on opening about the end of January. We are a little bit early to the game this year, which is absolutely fantastic,” she says.
She has a few reminders for those planning to head out on the snowmobile trails. First, all riders are required to have a permit. Buratynski encourages snowmobilers to always check the OFSC interactive trail guide before heading out to ensure the trails you want to ride are open. And, to always stay within the marked trails and ride with a buddy whenever possible.
“And we ask that you stay within the 50 kilometre an hour speed limit,” Buratynski adds. “And, of course, alcohol and cannabis don’t mix with snowmobiling.”
She says permit buyers, landowners and club volunteers help make snowmobiling possible in Bruce and Grey counties each year.
“Without them, we don’t have trails,” Buratynski says. “A huge thank you.”
