The Owen Sound Agricultural Society is determining the best path forward after the Victoria Park Grandstand went up in flames.
In a statement released by the society following the fire on May 7, it says they are deeply saddened by the blaze which destroyed several rows of wooden seating on one end of the structure and part of the brick and metal building under it.
The Ag Society thanked the Owen Sound Fire Department for their swift response to minimize the damage. Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says squatters may have caused the grandstand to catch fire.
“In 2023, we refurbished a large portion of the grandstands just in time for the annual Fall Fair, thanks to the generous donations from our sponsors. We also reroofed a significant section of the north side of the building beneath the grandstands with funds from a grant,” says the society.
The work on the grandstand started after receiving an unsafe order from the City of Owen Sound June 13, 2022.
While the organization’s board assesses the situation, they are planning on hosting the annual Fundraising Spring Dance on May 25 at the barn at Victoria Park.
“This event is a fundraiser for the Owen Sound Agricultural Society, with proceeds going towards improvements to our buildings, helping overcome this unfortunate situation and enhancing our annual Fall Fair,” says the society. “Whether you’re a seasoned line dancer or just looking for a good time, this event is perfect for everyone. Grab your friends and family and head down to the barn for a night you won’t forget!”
The event will start at 8 p.m. and will include line dance lessons as well as a performance by Country Music Association Ontario Male Artist of the Year Nominee Adam Cousins and his band at 9 p.m.
