Saugeen Shores has a brand new accessible playground.
It was made possible through support from the Saugeen Shores Rotary Club and is located at the new Lamont Sports Park in the south end of Port Elgin.
The Town held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday, (July 22) to mark the grand opening.
It includes features the Town says are almost all fully accessible, such as, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, play equipment that is accessible by ramp, a wheelchair-accessible gondola, accessible swings, sensory learning panels and accessible tables and benches.
The Town says the playground was years in the making, with input from the Town’s Accessibility Committee and community members. The Town is also giving special thanks to Whitney Bonnett and Jeff Virgo for their contributions and input.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says in a statement, it’s a fulfilment of the vision that began when Saugeen Shores won the Kraft Heinz Project Play in 2019.
He said, “We are grateful for the significant feedback by the Accessibility Committee and the public in promoting the adoption of accessible playground design features. We also thank our wonderful donors for their contributions in bringing this regionally significant park to Saugeen Shores.”
Funding for the accessible playground included donations from the Saugeen Shores Rotary Club and Kraft Heinz.
Monday’s ceremony also marked the completion of Phase Two of development of the sports park which includes the opening of a central square, a second parking lot and trail access from the west (near Walmart).
Two additional baseball diamonds and a double batting cage with storage is set to open in 2025.
Completion of Phase 2 development includes the opening of the central square, second parking lot and trail access from the west (near Walmart) for the park. The two additional ball diamonds and double batting cage with storage will open in 2025.
