Staff is finalizing a partnership agreement with the Owen Sound YMCA as plans continue to build a family Y in Saugeen Shores.
The goal is to start construction of the 27-million-dollar facility in 2023.
Director of Community Services Jayne Jagelewski reported to councillors on February 22nd, it’s likely that 2022 will see the advancement of concept drawings, facility design and specifications for construction which will cost an additional two-million-dollars.
Deputy Mayor Don Matheson says the town should look at what Kincardine has at the Davidson Centre, then modernize it and make it “a little better.”
Matheson says we’re only going to have one shot at the development and a committee should be formed to see what the community wants.
Jagelewski says not to worry as there will be several ad hoc groups formed that will be “imperative to the success of this facility prior to the doors ever opening.”
She says the plan right now is to build adjacent to the Plex with a 6-lane 25-meter pool and a leisure pool; a multi-use walking/running track; a conditioning centre which will include a weight and fitness room and a gymnasium is being considered as well.
Once construction is underway in 2023, it could take up to 14-months before the facility is finished.
