Kincardine has a new mayor.
First time councilor from Ward 1, Gerry Glover was named to the post after a Kincardine council 5-3 vote.
Glover replaces acting Mayor Randy Roppel, who chose not to let his name stand for mayor.
Roppel replaced former Mayor Anne Eadie who suddenly resigned on April 9th.
Glover says he let his name stand because many people urged him to do so.
He says it’s time to get down to work but gone are the days of in-fighting and improper decorum.
Glover says at the end of the day, council needs to be on the same page, “singing from the same hymn book.”
Councillor Maureen Couture also ran for mayor but lost out.
Couture congratulated Mayor Glover and stated she’s a team player and will help out where she can.
Earlier in the evening a group called Our Kincardine called on council to hold a by-election to allow the electorate to choose the next mayor.
It was obvious council wasn’t interested in going that route.
Spokesperson Kristin Beaton of Kincardine says she would be lying if she didn’t say the group was disappointed with the decision, but by the same token, they weren’t surprised either.
Voting for Mayor Glover were Deputy Mayor Randy Roppel and councilors Dave Cuyler; Bill Stewart; Dorne Fitzsimmons and Glover himself.
Voting for Maureen Couture were councilors Laura Haight, Doug Kennedy and Couture herself.
Next up will be to replace Clover in Ward One however there was no talk of that at Monday’s (APR 19) meeting.
